Unpopular opinion but here’s my take anyway. This year I have had a number of media requests to speak as an expert on race. I have refused them all, as that is not my expertise. My expertise is in leadership and communication for individuals and organisations. I can wax lyrical on behavioural economics, workplace culture, enterprise, leadership development and organisational psychology, presentation skills and storytelling.
Whilst I can talk about my lived experience it would be nice to be called by same media channels to talk about how leaders are responding to the pandemic, how remote working has affected workplace culture, decision making and cognition in times of change, how better narratives and storytelling can be used in politics to empower and assure citizens. Plus it is a hella lot less triggering.
I can easily talk about race here and as part of overall approach to culture with my clients, but you know, there are many of us out here to the right of Pantone 410 who are more than happy to ACTUALLY talk on mainstream media TV and radio about our areas of expertise that don’t include race or diversity.
