So, today, I decided to go a little medical for you, my beautiful audience. I’ll be doing this for the next month and I hope you do enjoy the series. Today, I’ll be focusing on female reproductive health. Today’s subtopic, which is the main topic is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.
This is a situation where a woman’s ovaries or adrenal glands produce more male hormones than normal. Now, the adrenal glands are the glands in your body as a lady that produces a variety of hormones including adrenaline, and aldosterone and cortisol which are steroids. Steroids mean a large class of organic compounds with a characteristic molecular structure containing four rings of carbon atoms. Now, one result of this syndrome is that cysts which are fluid filled sacs begin to develop on the ovaries. This condition mostly affects obese women. It can be abbreviated to PCOS. Women with this condition have very high risks of developing diabetes and heart diseases.
Some of the symptoms you may experience are listed below:
1. Pelvic pain: this is pain in your pelvic region. It is mostly referred to as pain in the region of your lower abdomen.
2. Excessive appearances of acne, oily skin or dandruff
3. Baldness or thinning hair
4. Infertility
5. Unnecessary growth of hair in the most unlikely places i.e. face, chest, stomach, thumb or toes.
6. Patches of thickened black or very brown skin
7. Menstrual irregularity
8. Inappropriate male features
As much as treatment can help, it has been medically confirmed to have no cure yet. Plus, there isn’t yet any cause of this problem but, it is said to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. This is one of the few issues that never get to be talked about but, scaringly enough, it can last for a lifetime and just like other very scary diseases, it has no solution. There are some basic treatments though. These treatments are not going to cure it obviously, but, will help in managing it. They include:
1. Birth control pills to help regularize periods
2. Metformin to prevent diabetes
3. Statins to control high cholesterol
4. Hormones to increase fertility
5. Procedures to remove excess hair
6. Electrolysis and physical exercises
This is all for now. Let’s all have a healthy life.
Thank you for reading.
