Pelvic Inflammatory Disease is a disease that occurs when sexually transmitted bacteria spread from the vagina to the womb, fallopian tube or ovaries. This disease is mostly spread by sexual contact and can only be gotten from dirty toilets in one of out ten cases. This doesn’t just happen when you have penetrative sex. It mostly affects young ladies below the age of 25 who have had multiple sex partners or have had a previous history of PID. It includes every type of sexual contact. Be it oral, anal or vaginal sex. Unlike some other diseases, this is very common and is estimated to affect around 1 million women in the US every year. Although this disease can be treated, it can become life threatening in some severe cases and if not properly treated at once, it can lead to infertility.
The symptoms of this disease include:
1. Pain in the lower abdomen. Also called lower abdominal pain
2. Smelly or weird coloured vaginal discharge
3. Very painful sex
4. Painful urination
5. Irregular menstrual periods
6. Pain in the upper right abdomen
The treatment if PID is restricted basically to antibiotics. You are required to take them all even if your symptoms stop showing. During the period of your medication, you are to see your doctor at least 2 days after you begin taking your drugs and two weeks after you finish taking your drugs. Doctors advice that one should do another Pelvic scan and a HVS test to make sure that one is completely safe from ID.
One sure way of staying away from this disease is practicing abstinence or using condoms during sexual intercourse.
