Nigeria’s former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has been appointed as a special envoy in the global battle against Coronavirus.
The appointment was announced by the Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Tedros Ghebreyesus.
Okonjo-Iweala would work alongside other renowned experts as special envoys for the newly inaugurated Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator.
ACT Accelerator is a global collaboration to accelerate the development, production and equitable access to new COVID-19 diagnostics, therapeutics and vaccines.
“Our shared commitment is to ensure ALL people have access to ALL the tools to defeat #COVID19,” said Ghebreyesus.
WHO director-general announced the appointment during the launch of the ACT Accelerator via webinar from Geneva, Switzerland.
Okonjo-Iweala would serve alongside British business executive, Sir Andrew Witty, to mobilise international commitment towards the ACT Accelerator initiative.
