Sometimes in March of the year 2015, my then fiance, now wife, sent me money to buy myself the new iPhone 6 as my birthday gift. I went in company of my friend, Adelusi Oluwatobi to the Slot office at Akure to purchase the phone. The phone, the pouch, the start up data and sim installation cost me a total of N188,000. This is apart from the fueling of the car to and from Ado-Ekiti.
I remember I had an argument with my friend over the value of the phone and I said if it was not a gift from someone very dear, I would have used the money to buy a land or something else of greater worth.
I however did a social experimentation by using that same amount to buy a land in a semi-developed area in Ado-Ekiti in order to determine the appreciation and depreciation value of both ‘commodities’.
As at this morning, the iPhone 6 was priced as Nigerian used for the sum of N30,000 whilst the land was priced at N650,000. It’s not even painting me. If I didn’t buy the phone then, I would have had N1,300,000.
Indeed, you dont need an iPhone if you don’t have a high sense. Stop spending your money on potentially valueless vanities. Ask yourself if that commodity would still retain its value in few years to come. You can store value with what you buy or lose your money. The choice is ultimately yours.
